Mark Messier is one of the greatest leaders in professional hockey history, the only player to captain two different franchises to Stanley Cup championships. Over a 25-year NHL career spanning from 1979 to 2004, Messier won six Stanley Cups — five with the Edmonton Oilers (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990) and one with the New York Rangers in 1994, ending that franchise's 54-year championship drought in one of hockey's most celebrated moments. He retired with 1,887 career points (694 goals, 1,193 assists), ranking second all-time in NHL history at the time of his retirement.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, Messier won the Hart Trophy as league MVP twice (1990, 1992) and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1984. His famous "guarantee" before Game 6 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils — followed by a hat trick to force Game 7 — remains one of the most iconic moments in NHL history. The Rangers retired his No. 11 jersey, and the league named its leadership award after him.
